Cockroach Control & Infestation Management

Cockroaches spread quickly, hide in warm cracks, and thrive on crumbs, grease and moisture. Surface sprays and DIY foggers rarely reach harbourages, and over-the-counter treatments can drive insects deeper into wall voids. Effective cockroach control requires species identification, non-repellent gels placed exactly where roaches feed, targeted dusting in voids, monitoring to prove success, and simple proofing and hygiene to prevent a return. A&H Pest Control delivers discreet, audit-ready cockroach control across London & Southern England. Call 020 8295 3402 for rapid help.

Quick answer — how to get rid of cockroaches properly

Identify the species, survey to locate harbourages and heat sources, deploy professional gel baits and fine dusts into cracks and voids, install monitors, remove food/water rewards, and follow up until traps are clear. Pair this with sealing and maintenance to stop reintroduction.

Species matters: German vs Oriental vs others

German cockroach (Blattella germanica)

Small, tan with two dark thoracic stripes; prefers kitchens, warm plant rooms, and behind appliances. Oothecae (egg cases) are carried by females until hatching, making early control vital. They move along kickboard voids, cable routes and hinge recesses. Gel baiting excels because they feed at night on tiny deposits.

Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis)

Larger, dark brown/black; often linked to basements, drains and cooler plant areas. Movement is slower; they tolerate lower temperatures. Control blends gel baiting near food contact areas with crack-and-crevice insecticidal dusts in voids and service ducts. Drain hygiene can be critical.

Other species (American, brown-banded)

Less common in typical UK housing but seen in hot, complex sites (hospitals, hotels, food production). Brown-banded exploit higher, dryer harbourages (behind clocks, switch plates). Treatment plans adapt: bait plus targeted void dusting and sealing of unusual hiding places.

Signs you have a cockroach infestation

  • Live sightings at night around kickboards, fridge motors and dishwashers
  • Pepper-like droppings in hinges, cupboard tops and appliance recesses
  • Egg cases or shed skins near warm voids and door frames
  • An oily or musty smell in heavy infestations
  • Activity spikes after hours in food premises when lights go off

If you see two or more of these, call 020 8295 3402 for a survey.

Why DIY sprays and foggers fail (and can make things worse)

Repellent sprays push roaches deeper into wall and floor voids. Foggers rarely penetrate harbourages, leave residues where you don’t need them, and can contaminate surfaces if misused. Worse, incorrect chemicals create avoidance behaviour, slowing proper treatment. Professional non-repellent gels and precise dusting win because roaches cannot detect them and transfer active ingredients within the colony.

Our cockroach control method (A&H, step by step)

1) Survey and mapping

We inspect kickboards, appliance backs, hinges, cable penetrations, heat sources (compressors, dishwashers, ovens), plant rooms and ducting. Glue monitors identify pressure points and species. In commercial sites, we map zones for audit purposes.

2) Non-repellent gel baiting

We apply food-grade professional gels in pinheads along runs, hinges, inside cupboard lip profiles and near heat sources. Placement density matches pressure; we protect food-contact surfaces and keep gels off visible prep areas. In sensitive settings, we schedule out-of-hours.

3) Crack-and-crevice dusting

We treat inaccessible voids with fine, targeted dusts using precision nozzles: behind kickboards, under plinths, inside conduit chases and wall–floor junctions. For Oriental roaches linked to drains, we treat service ducts and reinforce drain hygiene.

4) Monitoring and rotation

Monitors are checked on follow-up; bait is refreshed or formulations rotated to avoid palatability dips. We reduce placements as captures fall to zero, then confirm silence.

5) Proofing and hygiene

We seal oversize cable/pipe penetrations, refit kickboard ends, add door brush strips if needed, and brief on cleaning around hinges and appliance wheels. We recommend drain caps or maintenance where odours and moisture persist.

Kitchens and food premises — audit-ready control

  • Tamper-resistant bait stations where appropriate; gels kept off prep surfaces
  • Device maps, product sheets and visit reports aligned with HACCP
  • Staff briefings on spills, waste, night closures and deliveries (a common reintroduction route)
  • Out-of-hours visits to avoid disruption

Residential and hospitality — discreet, safe programmes

For homes, flats and hotels, we use low-odour, non-repellent gels and minimal dusting targeted to voids, with clear guidance on cleaning and access between visits. We protect pets and children by excluding them from treated areas until products dry and by placing gels in hidden profiles.

Preventing reintroduction after treatment

  • Inspect deliveries and incoming appliances; wipe pallet bases and crate edges
  • Seal cable/pipe passes; keep kickboard ends capped
  • Keep bins lidded; clean under and behind appliances monthly
  • Address damp and heat build-up; repair drips and tidy warm, cluttered voids
  • In multi-unit properties, coordinate with management to treat connected risers

How long does treatment take?

Light German cockroach activity can drop sharply within days; heavy or multi-zone infestations need phased visits over weeks to collapse egg cycles and tackle all harbourages. We’ll outline realistic timeframes after survey.
