Flea & Tick Control (Pets, Indoor, Outdoor)

Fleas and ticks turn homes and gardens into uncomfortable spaces for people and pets. DIY sprays without a pet treatment regime usually fail because only a small portion of the population is adult; the rest are eggs, larvae and pupae in carpets, cracks and bedding. Effective flea and tick control coordinates veterinary-approved pet treatments with targeted premises applications and outdoor measures where needed. A&H Pest Control serves London & Southern England with safe, practical programmes. Call 020 8295 3402 for advice and booking.

Quick answer — how to stop fleas and ticks

Treat all pets on the same day with vet-approved products, wash and dry pet bedding hot, vacuum thoroughly (including edges and furniture), and arrange a professional treatment for carpets, cracks and pet resting areas. For ticks, remove correctly and treat the garden margins if activity is recurrent, then use ongoing pet preventatives.

Understanding the flea life cycle (why activity persists)

Only about 5% of a flea population is on the animal at any one time. Eggs, larvae and pupae sit in carpets, floorboard cracks and furnishings. Pupae can delay emergence until vibration or warmth indicates a host is present. That’s why a single spray without pet treatment seems to “fail”: new adults emerge days later.

Signs of fleas and ticks

  • Pets scratching, biting along the back or tail base; “flea dirt” (black specks) that redden when damp on tissue
  • Small bites on ankles and lower legs after sitting or walking on carpets
  • Adult fleas seen when brushing pets or along skirting edges
  • Ticks attached to pets after walks through long grass or wooded areas

Our flea treatment programme

1) Coordination with pet treatments

We ask owners to treat all cats/dogs the same day with veterinary products (not supermarket-only spot-ons). Without this, premises treatments are undermined.

2) Premises treatment

We apply professional residual insecticides to carpets, rugs, skirting edges, furniture bases and pet resting areas. We pay attention to warm, shaded areas where larvae develop. We avoid wetting; light, even coverage is the goal.

3) Vacuuming and re-emergence management

Vacuum thoroughly before treatment to stimulate emergence, then again 48 hours after treatment to remove dead adults and debris. Expect some activity for a short period as pupae hatch; the residual will control them.

Tick control and garden measures

Tick removal and risks

Remove ticks promptly with a tick tool, pulling steadily close to the skin. Avoid twisting with fingers or burning. Monitor the site; if redness expands or illness follows, seek medical/vet advice.

Outdoor reduction

Keep lawns cut, clear leaf litter at margins, create simple borders between grass and shrubs, and discourage wildlife beds near play areas. Where ticks are repeatedly brought in, we can discuss targeted perimeter treatments.

Preventing a return

  • Maintain a veterinary preventatives regime year-round as advised
  • Wash pet bedding weekly at high temperature; tumble dry where appropriate
  • Regularly vacuum edges, under furniture and pet resting spots
  • Limit pets’ access to bedrooms during active control to reduce bites
  • After holidays or cattery returns, check pets and bedding proactively

Safety and re-entry

We use UK-approved products and advise on re-entry times. Keep pets and children out until areas are dry. Fish tanks and sensitive species are covered as needed during treatment.

Why professional help beats piecemeal DIY

Over-the-counter sprays miss hidden life stages, and inconsistent pet treatment creates a cycle of re-infestation. Professional programmes align pet, premises and (if required) garden actions so results are predictable and lasting.
