Mark came & saw us with a mouse issue. Was very knowledgeable & carried out a survey of the premises. We have used the firm before - very reliable & flexible with appointments. Gave piece of mind & fees are very good.

We had a problem with our loft electrics being chewed and stripped. Our initial thoughts were mice or squirrels, but on talking to Mark he was pretty certain it was in fact Parakeets. On his arrival at our property he confirmed within minutes that it was parakeets and exactly where they had got into the roof. Through an external extractor fan cover which they had broken through and nested in our eaves (who knew!). Mark really knew his stuff re their behaviour and was excellent, fixing the issue quickly and efficiently. I’d not hesitate to use him again for any pest problems we have in the future.

Mark was great, contacted me past working hours and came out the following day. Had a rat in the toilet drain, he came, laid bait and advised on remedial action. Really helpful and would recommend him to anyone!

A&H Pest Control were excellent from start to finish. They came round same day I called, confirmed the noise was mice after finding droppings, and thoroughly laid poison in all the affected areas. They were professional, knowledgeable, and explained everything clearly. After about 10 days the noise completely stopped, which shows the treatment worked. Very happy with the service and would definitely recommend A&H Pest Control

Top guy, top service! We heard noises in our roof space, saw the brilliant reviews, and contacted Mark who came round the next day. Based on our conversation, and even with extremely limited access to the roof space, he thought a squirrel may have moved in; he set two traps and returned a week or so later when we felt we hadn’t heard noises for a few days. Mark was right; a squirrel had been caught and the problem is now solved

Mark had been fantastic helping us with a pest problem in our cellar. He comes out quickly, explains clearly what the issue is, answers any questions we have, and is very professional. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him. Thanks Mark!

Rodent activity is more than a nuisance. Droppings, urine and nesting material contaminate surfaces and stock, while gnawing damages wiring and pipework. This page summarises the health risks linked to rodent infestations, the scenarios that raise exposure, and the practical steps that protect people and keep businesses compliant. If you’ve found fresh signs, call 020 8295 3402 for rapid help across London & Southern England.

How exposure happens in real buildings

Food contact surfaces and packaging

Contamination occurs when rodents travel along prep benches, shelving and pallet tops. Even if food is sealed, fouling on outer packaging spreads to hands, equipment and other products.

Housekeeping shortcuts

Dry sweeping, blowing or vacuuming with the wrong kit aerosolises residues. That’s why damp methods and disinfection are standard in professional cleanup.

Disturbing lofts and voids

Clearing boxes or insulation in lofts releases dust from historic activity. Without PPE and dampening, you can inhale contaminated particles.

Who is most at risk

  • Children, older adults and people with respiratory conditions
  • Food handlers and facilities teams who work near contaminated zones
  • Households with pets (which can also spread contamination across floors)
  • Businesses where customers or patients expect high hygiene standards

Health risk reduction: practical steps that work

Rapid control and safe cleanup

The first line of defence is to end activity quickly with a professional programme, then clean and disinfect affected areas using safe methods and PPE.

Proofing entries

Brush strips, vent guards, sealed service holes and drain fixes stop re-entry. This is essential to reduce long-term exposure risk.

Food-safe routines

Store stock off the floor, rotate goods, clean shelf edges, and sanitise hands and tools after handling outer packaging from areas with prior activity.

Work and public environments (compliance focus)

Food premises

Auditors and EHOs expect a documented pest management plan, mapped devices, trend notes and corrective actions. Evidence of rodents without action risks enforcement and reputational harm. We provide audit-ready files and advice on housekeeping and proofing.

Healthcare and education

Safeguarding, access control and enhanced documentation are standard. Non-toxic monitoring and mechanical control dominate, with cleanup and proofing scheduled to avoid disruption.

Why DIY often increases health risk

  • Unsecured poisons accessible to children, pets or non-target wildlife
  • Dead rodents in inaccessible voids causing odour and secondary insect issues
  • Dry sweeping that throws contamination into the air
  • Blocking holes while rodents are inside, forcing gnawing and indoor intrusion

If you’ve tried DIY and activity persists, stop and call 020 8295 3402. We’ll stabilise the situation safely.

What to expect from A&H (risk-aware approach)

  • Survey and fast control using secured methods matched to the site
  • Safe decontamination with correct biocides and PPE
  • Proofing to remove routes and reduce future exposure
  • Clear aftercare and, for businesses, documentation that satisfies audits

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to clean after your first visit?

Yes—with guidance. We’ll tell you which areas to avoid until treated and where damp cleaning and disinfection can start safely.

Do you remove contaminated insulation?

Where lofts are heavily soiled, we can remove and replace insulation after disinfection.

How quickly do risks drop after treatment?

You’ll see immediate risk reduction as activity ceases. Decontamination then removes residues; proofing prevents a repeat.

Stay safe and compliant

If you’ve found fresh droppings or noticed gnawing, the safest route is a professional response that ends activity, removes contamination and seals entries. Call 020 8295 3402 for advice or to book a visit.
